Nelson Mandela wordt internationaal gevierd als aanvoerder van het verzet tegen apartheid in Zuid-Afrika en als wereldwijd symbool van de strijd voor gerechtigheid en verzoening. Maar Mandela stond ook tientallen jaren lang te boek als terrorist. Pas in 2008, drie weken voor zijn 90ste verjaardag, werd Mandela geschrapt van de lijst met terrorismeverdachten aan wie de toegang tot de Verenigde Staten is ontzegd. – Mandela spreekt tot de verbeelding van uiteenlopende publieksgroepen: zwarte nationalisten, blanke rugbyspelers, communisten, voorvechters van de democratische rechtsstaat, wereldleiders en idealistische jongeren. Hoe werd deze jongen uit een Afrikaans boerendorp een van de helden van de 20ste eeuw? Waarom wil iedereen, waar ook ter wereld, met Nelson Mandela op de foto? – Nelson Mandela in een notendop is het verhaal van een leven in dienst van een ideaal. De roep van de Mapori door Mirjam van Roode
In De roep van de mapori vertelt Mirjam van Roode bevlogen over haar fascinatie voor Kenia, haar huwelijk met een Keniaan en de geboorte van haar kinderen in Afrika. Daarnaast schrijft ze openhartig over cultuurverschillen, multiculturele relaties en de Afrikaanse actualiteit.
Wanneer Mirjam in 1988 stage loopt in Kenia wordt ze op slag verliefd op het land. Nog voor haar afstuderen als fysisch geograaf vertrekt ze opnieuw naar Afrika, waar ze tijdens een safari haar grote liefde, Njenga, ontmoet. Samen proberen ze een leven op te bouwen in Nederland, maar dat blijkt niet eenvoudig en zodra Mirjam een baan in Kenia vindt keren ze terug. Ze kopen een stuk land buiten Nairobi en krijgen twee kinderen. Als de relatie tussen Mirjam en Njenga steeds moeizamer wordt en haar werkcontract in 1998 afloopt, keren Mirjam en haar kinderen met grote tegenzin terug naar Nederland. Ieder jaar gaan ze terug naar Kenia om hun familie op te zoeken. Wanneer echter tijdens de onlusten in december 2007 blijkt dat haar kinderen niet langer als Kenianen worden gezien maar als Kikuyu’s, wordt Mirjams vertrouwen in het land behoorlijk op de proef gesteld.
