Welcome to the website of the NVAS, the Netherlands African Studies Association
The Netherlands African Studies Association was set up in 1997 to provide a scientific forum for Africanists working in the Netherlands. It aims to promote and coordinate the study of the social sciences on Africa by maintaining close links with universities and research institutes. It does not offer an educational programme. It is multidisciplinary in composition, with the following disciplines currently being represented: cultural anthropology, non-western sociology, archaeology, pre-
and proto-history, social geography, economics, linguistics, literature, political science, social administration, law, environmental studies, comparative religious studies and women's studies.
On 16 October 2009 the NVAS organizes a Study day for their members and everyone interested. Members will present their research on the basis of a poster. Please read the Call for posters. Venue: NWO/WOTRO, Java-gebouw, Laan van Nieuw Oost Indië 300, 2593 CE Den Haag. The presentations will be in Dutch.
The NVAS cooperates closely with the African Studies Centre (ASC) in Leiden, the only academic research institute in the Netherlands devoted entirely to the study of Africa. The ASC welcomes African scholars through its visiting fellowship programme, offers a monthly seminar programme and has an extensive library that is open to the general public.
